Name that mosaic...

I just love that I get a box of scrap supplies in my mail each month. I feel very lucky to be on such a fun design team and get some really edgy products through Scrap In Style tv. This month the collection of scrap goodies is called "The Urban Prep Collection" and you can actually pre-order it right now, by clicking this link here. The top photo is a peek of the whole set and the other photos here are peeks of a layout I made and will post in my gallery tomorrow. Such fun colors and textures in this stuff...I am loving it all! I scrapped my layout based on a challenge posted at the "Inspired by Amelie" blog. I rarely do challenges, but thought this one was perfect for my subject.
So, I opted to scrap a photo mosaic that has been sitting on my scrap desk for awhile now. I browse so many different blogs for insipration and this photo mosaic happened to be one I printed out, but now I have no idea where I originally saw it online. If you happen to know who or where it came from, I would love for you to hook me up with the creator so that I can credit that person as well as find out who the mini photos all belong to.
Besides that, if you have a Flickr account and create mosaics, feel free to leave me a comment and link so that I can check out your creations and be inspired by you too!
Speaking of names...in my last post I mentioned we have not decided on a baby name yet. We do have several options in mind and if you want to comment on those, by all means, add your two-cents today. Here are some of the choices {in any combination too} that are in consideration:
Greyson
Jock Bennett
Finn (Finnegan/Finley)
Gannon
Crew
Maguire
Dain
Rheece/Reid
Tillman
and I have lots more, but this list is already too long for Chip's liking. His two picks are already listed. =)

Grayson Reid would be my pick. No I didn't have a typo, my daughter had a classmate who was Grayson with the "a" and I just liked it.

If it adds to your mix, we have a son named Skip. My husband has always wanted another son so he could name him Chip. ;) So, I think Skip would fit great with your family.

I like Greyson, Finn & Reid. Great list!!

I love Finn, Rheece and Greyson. Speaking from a family experience, Jock will only guarantee some major playground taunting because of all the lovely words that can come after the name.

Anonymous said...

Love Greyson Dain...you could call him Grey...that is a very cool guy name. Finn is my least favorite...but nobody liked my baby name until she was born now it is perfect. :o)
Congratulations!!!
my son's name is Levi...I think that is a pretty cool name too! :o)

I really like Reid Tillman (together). Pat Tillman really was a hero to be looked up to. (I'm assuming that's who it's after...)

I also think Reid, or Rheese, go well with the names you've picked for your kiddos so far... Original, but still not TOTALLY uncommon...

Love Finn and Greyson. :) Reece is cute as well. :)

I can't believe that it's almost here.... :)

So, I've never left a comment, but as a "name snob" this is a bit of a must for me! I actually love your list (we think alike)! I'm a fan of Finn, Gannon (I actually know a Gannon), Grayson (I like it with an "a" better too). As for the Reece/Reid debate....have you considered Reeves? That's one I'm partial to! I love your blog, and am quite the lurker! Keep us posted (I'm looking forward to the labor details since I am an L&D nurse, but am always keeping up and praying for you)! Love you Girl!

I LOVE Greyson! I also really like Finnegan and Dain (or Dane), Bennett as a first name and Rheece (or Rhys)

One of my favorite names is Declan.
GL! Your kids all have great names I'm sure you'll pick the perfect one.

Have you considered Parker?
I have a girlfriend who is naming her son McClane and I think that is adorable too :)
This was one of my fave parts about having kids LOL too bad I only got to do it twice!

Ok, Don't think I'm a freak or anything, but I know where that mosaic came from. I have a weird memory for things I've seen and you got it from Ali Edwards' blog here: http://aliedwards.typepad.com/_a_/2007/12/flickr-favorite.html

Like I said, I'm weird.

And for the record, I'm IN LOVE with the name Finn. That name seems like a personality that would fit your family. :)

Blessings on your day...

Oh Jody, Greyson is passable. BUT, The others, so lame :( Please do not tag your son with a name like Jock for the rest of his life. Brutal.
Remember, this naming thing isnt just a you and Chip thing, you are impacting your child forever. It is also sad that you are trying so hard to be "hip" and not attaching any kind of family-related name to him....Oh well.

Anonymous said...

I just read the comment from "anonymous". As a manager and human resource executive for a major company.....Almost all those names on a resume would cause me some pause. Not only that, but I suspect the children in my kids' school would have a field day with most of them esp. "Jock". Not fair, but just reality. What would you be thinking? You are naming a little MAN, not a toy boy

shalay said...

Wow, I was just browsing through your comments and I must admit that I'm a little stunned at the comments from "anonymous" and "sylvia". Really? I learned a long time ago that if you can't say something nice, then you shouldn't say anything at all.

As for your names, Jody, I think you have a great list here! My favorites are Greyson and Rheece.

And please don't worry about giving your son a unique name. I have a very different name and it's never "held me back" in life. In fact, it's usually a conversation starter! Also, just think of all those über successful people in the world with unusual names. Oprah is one that comes to my mind : ).

Hey, Jody,
Still hanging in there I see. Can't wait to hear the news. The names have a common thread of uniqueness and masculinity. (I know Jock is a French variation of Jack and now-a-days means "athlete," but I think it will forever be associated with a piece of equipment--masculine to be sure--but it may be a few generations before that word (without the French "J") will not raise an eyebrow. Speaking of names with the French "J" sound, a friend of mine knows a little girl named "neglige". Hmmmm. Not sure her parents thought down the road with that one. =)

I love the names of your children. This child is so blessed to be a part of your family.

Anonymous said...

Love Greyson and Finn...and all the rest of your children's names! Did anonymous ever think that there might be a family link to your names, like that they are all Gaelic in nature? No, she wouldn't think that, because people like that only wish to criticize without thinking of others' feelings. You name that sweet baby the hippest, nicest name that you and your family feel best suits him. I personally can't wait to see his sweet face!

God bless you and yours,
Lisa

OH.MY.GOODNESS anonymous .... seriously...I mean... SERIOUSLY?? Are you serious when you say such negative things about the name someone else chooses to name their child?? Honestly, I don't mean to go on and on here (or maybe I do...) BUT my point is, PLEASE, PLEASE think about what you write before you write it and how it will make someone feel. (Have you heard...if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything? I think that applies here.)
Sorry about the soapbox, but it really bothered me.
ANYWAY, Jodi -
I love the names Grayson and Gannon.... All of them are so original, however I'm partial to "G" names I guess :)
Have a great day everyone! (you too, anonymous)

Thoughts...

I love the name Finn. Great Expectations was one of my favorites and the title character was Finn. I just wonder if Finn Ferlaak (at least as a first name) is too much of a mouthful. I love Greyson and I love Reid and Dain and Bennett as well. Couple of options:

Greyson Finn Ferlaak
Greyson Reid Ferlaak
Reid Greyson Ferlaak (fave)
Dain Finnegan Ferlaak
Bennett Reid Ferlaak
Greyson Bennett Ferlaak

Best of luck. You are in my prayers!

Jody,
i love Finn but on your list Tillman is actually my favorite, it actually is a family name in our family, my great grandfather and then my cousin. My cousin only had girls and so their youngest got daughter got it as part of her name, she actually has two middle names. we have a tucker and it definately was not common when we named him. You choose what works for your family and don't worry what anyone else thinks.

I like Gannon Maquire the best. My next choice would be Greyson/Grey & then Finley/Finn. Good luck.

Greyson, Finn and Maguire from your list. Jock rhymes with Brock, so that wouldn't work too well (IMHO).

I like Reece but not with the "h" and now I can't remember the rest of your list.

:)

I've love all of your kid's names, so I'm sure you'll pick another great one.

The mosaic reminded me of ali edwards' blog but not sure if it's from there.

reading blogs from all parts of the world shows me one thing: although we have lots in common, and we scrap alike :-), names are so different from country to country. i don't think even one of them would ever be thought of in south africa. in the USA it seems that names that are/were surnames are quite common?

i have always found the names of your kids interesting, and i'm sure that when you meet the little guy, he will 'introduce' himself to you...

besides, it's your personal choice. and no matter what his name, he will be welcomed and loved!

good luck!

it's so funny how unisex so many names are these days, and I think it's great! I have a Cameron (boy) and Kendall (girl) so I know first hand ... and I have a new niece names Finleigh and the name truly "fits" her, she's a month old, and mom and dad call her Finn all the time - great name! My daughter goes to school with a Maguire, and the nick name is Maggie (it's a girl) so I love that name too ... but honestly, I think the names you've chosen as possibilities are wonderful, and I have to agree with the poster that said that this little man will "introduce" himself to you, and you'll just know the name then - it'll just happen.

best of luck with everything ....

I love that you like to pick original names that are not overused. As a former teacher I really wanted to give my kids names that were not so overused that they would have three other kids in the class with the same name. good Luck with naming your son. I am sure whatever he is named he will be ablessing to yourfamily and blessed to have you all for his family.

I'm partial to Rheece, I have one, but I chose the REESE spelling simply because I didn't want him to have to correct his spelling all of the time in school (I had that battle). All of the names are nice strong names that will grow with him. Those previous posters should be ashamed of temselves. Maybe their just jealous that they didn't think up cool names for their kids.

Best of Luck and can't wait to hear your final decision!

I have been reading your blog for awhile and love it! I am a fan of your children's names. My daughter is named Bella, so I REALLY like that one! As for the new baby, I like all of the names you listed. I am hesitant on Jock, because of the meaning most often associated with it and because it rhymes with Brock. I think Finn and Bennett are my favorites. As for people who warn against an unusual name, I would not worry about that. My name is Shene' (rhymes with Renee') and I have made it through life just fine. I LIKE not having 4 other people in the room have the same name as me. Happy choosing!

hi jody! i almost couldn't believe when i read Greyson on your list! our little boy is Greyson James (although he is called g-man or munchkin alot) :)
other boy names we considered were garret, emerson, or chandler.
i can't wait to hear what you decide!!! take care!

oo.
if you're bandying about rheece jody, consider the Welsh spelling!
my brothers name is Rhys.
if spoken in a Welsh accent you have to roll the R, because Rh is actually one letter in the Welsh language.
that goes for my name too! i will pronounce it to you in real life one day!

Finn and Greyson are great! But all of your names on the list are! I love "odd" names. It give the child more uniqueness.

As for the crazies saying Jock is out of the question....I kind of like it. I'd have NEVER come up with it on my own, but I like it. And, if all the names on your list disturb Ms. HR director, she better retire soon because there's a lot worse out there!

Briana said...

I think the names you are considering are great ones! Truly unique and fit well with the rest of your children.

I for one tried to steer clear of common names. I found out after I named our first born, a boy, Logan, that it was actually pretty common and he's now always had another one in his class. We didn't make the same mistake with our son, Quinn. In fact all the other Quinns I know are girls. And our little daughter is named Olive, which gets alot of blank faces when people ask what her name is. But we love them and that's all that matters.

MMMMmmm. I don't think I'd be happy if my HR Director created a shortlist of candidates based on whether she liked their names....

I love Finn. I had it on my list for Thomas, but my husband crossed it off (and I crossed off some of his choices too). I had Philadelphia on my list for Charlotte....and Nick was crossing that one off as I was writing it....it's a long name.....he had plenty of time to get his pen out!

I can't wait to see your little boy's face. Whatever name you choose will be perfect for him.

Wow, some people are just hateful and must live miserable existences to be so blatantly rude…

Moving on, I absolutely adore all of your names… coming from an adult Brittany – in my kindergarten class alone there were 4 others – in one class, not the whole grade… a unique name is much appreciated! My middle name is actually my mothers first and middle combined: Dana + Rene = Danae… and my sister’s middle name is my great-grandmother’s maiden name, Ellis.

Many people don’t like the names that I have chosen for future children either – my daddy has two daughters, so will ‘lose’ his name when my younger sister marries… which is why I am choosing to name our first born, be it a girl or a boy, Prater… that’s what I was known as all through high school anyways… I am sure they will love it, if only for the one reason to be connected to their family heritage.

Boo on the ‘box’ thinkers of the world!

lol...I like all of your name picks Jody. I do have to tell you...I have a poodle that I call Finnegan. Of course she gets Finn. The shi tzu is called Casey. My kids loved Mr. Dressup when they were little, so the puppy children were named after the two favourite characters.

My grandsons are Keegan and Quinn, which I really like too. You are wise to go with what you like...and I have to say, your choices to date for all your kiddies fantastic.

I've been a lurker on your blog for a few months now so I thought I should come out of lurkville and give you my 2 cents. All of the names on your list are sweet but I like Greyson and Finn the best. I come from an Italian family so when naming our kids I always thought of what their names would sound like when my parents said them with an italian accent!
Thanks for being so transparent on your blog. You have a beautiful family!

Jody,
I just read through your comments and thankfully, most were positive. Some people should just not comment at all.

I like most of the names you have on your list! I have to say, I am with the majority and really like Greyson. I really like Reid and Maguire too. Whatever you guys choose will be perfect.

Some other names to throw in the mix are Aidan (or Aiden), Carter, Zane, Quinlan (Quinn), Jayden, Jair (Jere), Tallon, Jackson, Hudson, Colton, Hayden and Seth.

Wasn't "Jock" the dad on the show "Dallas" with the Ewing family? He was a strong guy. I kind of like it, but it does rhyme with Brock so when the boys get older and you have to yell for them, you might get the wrong one from time to time. My dad's name is Danny and mine is Brandi and sometimes it was hard to hear who my mom was yelling for LOL...just a thought.

Good luck! Can't wait to meet him!

I'm sorry to hear people have been rude about your name choices. I can't imagine telling another person they should or should not name their kid something. Sure, if asked I give my opinion, and if it's someone I'm close to I will tell them of an experience or two I've had with a name. But, kids just seem to melt into their names. My friend picked a name for her son I wasn't a fan of but, when he was born it totally fit, and now I love the name, and I love the little boy so much!

Hope you don't mind me saying so: I really love the name Finley, and I also like Reid.

I just met an 11 year old boy name Ryker. It was a combination of his grandpa's Ryan, and Kert. I think it's such a cool name.

I can just imagine the teasing my child will get as my favorite boy name is Jedidiah Moses. My second choice is Zale Andrew. Zale is a cousin of my moms who passed away at 12 of luekemia. She loves that name and wanted to carry it on but, my Dad doesn't like it. Since I'm not a fan of her name (she isn't either) and my sister has claim to using her middle name I wanted to honor her by using Zale. Andrew was my best friend who died of Cycstic Fibrosis. Both these children had short lives but lived it well and for the Glory of God. In spite of diversity, they loved, had joy, and worshiped God. I'd love to give my child their names.

I also saw someone comment they like the name Bennet. Reid Bennet sounds cool.

I can't wait to see what you end up naming him. All the names are cute and totally fit with your family.

Violet

p.s. I LOVE the names Teagan, Brock, and Wyndham. I taught a precious little girl named Teagan to swim, Brock is the name of my cousin, and I just like Wyndham. Fun, unusual names!
