My first scrap "dare".

This is what I came up with in response to taking on my first dare from this scrap challenge blog. The challenge was posed by the incredible, everyday moment kind of photographer capturer, Tara Whitney. She invited scrappers to do a page based on a t-shirt slogan.
I jumped at the chance to not only scrap the saying on the t-shirt, but also a picture of me wearing the shirt. This is what I am comfortable wearing when I am most "me"...but wouldn't dare wear it to my husband's golf club or if I were to go out for dinner where there are linen napkins on the table. But at home, it's perfect.
The slogan, "Keep on lickin' " makes me think of how it's so important to hang in there when the going gets tough in life at times. I've certainly had my share of that in my life. That's one of the reasons I love this shirt and wanted to scrap my thoughts about it's truth. I think I've finally 'mastered' the idea that when life gets hard it doesn't mean that I've messed up necessarily, or that I should take a different direction, but that I should keep plugging away and taking things one little step at a time. So with a tootsie pop...you have to work at it and it takes time to reach the tootsie roll chocolate center. Except with 'Mr. Owl'...he got to the niddle in three bites. But generally speaking, more often than not, the 'good stuff' in life takes time, energy and effort. Sometimes I've not even been sure that there was something 'inside that was worth going after'...but it turns out life has proven me wrong. In a good way. =)
SO, that's my profound layout in response to the "scrap a t-shirt slogan" dare. I set my Heidi Swapp stuff to the side for this one, and instead used papers from the Basic Grey "Blush" kit I was anxious to put to use. I just love the colors and patterns in this line. They're so 'Nitty.Gritty', no?! You can click on the pictures to enlarge them- for those of you who may not be able to read the journaling on this.
Before I go, I just have to add these two thoughts...
Chip said to me as I was finishing this page up, "You need to start scrapping other stuff. You're gonna typecast yourself". SO, I guess that's my next dare. Scrap something besides having to do with me and tootsie pops!
Also, as much as I dislike advertising, I have to admit it works sometimes, because as I was typing this post, I had the Tootsie Pop song in my head the whole time. Here it is...I bet I've got most of the words right, and I haven't heard the song in years. Crazy how that happens!
Tootsie Pop song from the tv ad-
"The world looks awfully good to me, 'cuz Tootsie Roll is all I see.
Whatever it is I think I see, becomes a Tootsie Roll to me!
{Tootsie Roll I love you; you're so chocolately sweet.??}
Tootsie Roll (something) I'm in love with you...
Whatever it is I think I see, becomes a Tootsie Roll to me!"
Feel free to leave me comments helping me out with the words I messed up on with that jingle. I guess it has been awhile!

i really love this and your journaling is so heartfelt....since the DT announcement I really enjoying reading your blog....glad I found it!

Jody Just my very humble, probably meaningleess opinion. But your profound messages might be better taken in those pages wihtout total references to you, but rather, refer to your daughter and the pain of your certain memories (which may have a different scrap message all together). The total "Jody" focus takes away from the real mesage I believe you are trying to convey. Only my humble opinion...ignore if you wish. But these pages were confusing in their message to a novice....I blieve your intent was not to make it a "JODY" story anthology. Because if you read deeper, it is really about your daugher. Most people won't get past the Jody-stuff. Just my opionion but Love YOu....

Nice work Jody - but too "Jody focused". Forgive us....but your 'messages" get lost in the glitz sometimes. Like this. loving you always, Sue

Just to note here in the comments...this page IS about me. That's me in the pic with one of my fun t-shirts. I didn't intend to make it about Teagan, but rather how I am a different person because of her death. And not the dark, dismayed, self-pitying kind of person that can often result from death of a loved one...but instead one who still looks to the simple things in life that bring purpose and happiness. Even something little- like an inspiring Tootsie Pop t-shirt, and making scrap pages. Hope this insight sheds a bit more light on the thought behind this layout. It was supposed to be a fun little dare. That's all. =)

Hiya Jody~
I consider myself a "novice" in scrapping and blogging and all I saw was a cute scrap page about a tshirt. Hmmm, maybe I need to start looking deeper for more meaning in scrap pages than I do? Nah, I will just continue on seeing things how I do on your blog {fun, full of life and joy and creative ideas!}. I come here for those things and leave with those things and remembering that I sometimes need to create my own joy! =) God bless!

The world looks mighty good to me,
'cause Tootsie Rolls are all I see.
Whatever it is I think I see,
becomes a Tootsie Roll to me.
Tootsie Roll how I want your choclatey chew,
Tootsie Roll I think I'm in love with you.
Whatever it is I think I see,
becomes a Tootsie Roll to me.

Oh, by the way, I love your layout of YOU because YOU are special!!! I, for one, will never tire of hearing about YOU because your words are words of wisdom and seem to come from God. May He bless you real good.

Can't you just see that silly wise sharp-beaked owl? So fun.

Even some of your fans are questioning your motives now...hmmm, shouldn't that tell you something. I think you need to think about what your goal is through this blog, is it to talk about yourself and how cool you think you are or to share your faith in a non self-centered way

Dear previous anonymous:

I have been wondering the same thing. It is wonderful to visit here and be inspired. But when the focus starts charging forward toward the me-me-me-me-me, I leave.
The ever-building shrine of Jody-dom gets to be way too much. Anyway, see ya, I'm leaving now.

To my 'questioning fans'~
This blog is about a lot of things. There is a long list of labels in the sidebar that even breaks the posts down a bit. I have never set any "goals" for my. It changes from day to day...as I do. I imagine if all I did were preach and talk about God, that certain readers would stop reading. If, on the otherhand, all I did were talk about the way that life has been unfair to me and my family and the struggles that Wyndham has from her brain injury each day, I suspect that others would quit reading. If I were to write strictly about scrapbooking or recipes or buttercream, I'm sure I would lose a certain type of fan...but gain others. You see? My blog is about a whole bunch of things, and the fact that it may or may not appeal to all the people, all the time is really not my concern, or the basis of what I post. On any given day, I could blog about a hundred different topics. In the end, I ask nothing from anybody who stops in here, nor do I lose sleep should people not come back. THAT's exactly what a blog is about. Take it or leave it. Your comments, may be your opinions, and they have been heard. I guess there has been something here that has piqued your interest...or you never would have read through long enough to comment. I have no hard feelings toward anyone who reads or doesn't read my blog. These types of comments just go to show that everyone is different, that we don't see things the same way...so is life. It's why there are political parties and different sports, and millions of different stores and restaurants and clothing styles and on and on and on. Diversity, I think, is a beautiful thing. I hope that I keep growing towards that end as a person...that I never get stuck being so narrow-minded that everything I say and do looks and sounds the same! Nitty.Gritty. really isn't as big a deal, I don't think, as some may think it is. It's just a little ol' blog about my perspective in life. I appreciate that others have their own ideas about this. Really. I'm just happy keeping it a simple, occasionally thought-provoking read. =)

I think this page rocks! Why is it that something like a scrap page has to create drama here? You don't see people getting all *hot* about layouts when Elsie or other scrappers make stuff about themsleves, do you? I say, if people think that nittygritty has issues and is too self-focused, then they are the ones with issues. The world needs more people who can find meaning from candy. Like you did on your page. Great work! And soooo what I'd expect from you. *Rock on*.

Jody,
I've been reading your blog for a while, now. I enjoy it and look forward to reading what you have to share, everyday. In fact it is the first blog I go to out of the ten or so blogs I have in my favorites.
I have never once felt that you are drawing too much attention to yourself. Isn't the whole "blog" thing suppose to be about the writer and their life?
Keep up the good work and know that you are affecting many people in a positive way.
Thank You!

Speaking of "ordinary," I recently picked up a random book (biography?) at the library that, as I was reading, sometimes made me think of you and your beautifully "ordinary" life: Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life

To the anonymous posters,

Don't you think you should be a little embarassed by the way you are acting? You come to Jody's blog...HER blog and criticize her. We as women( I am assuming you are women) need to encourage and cheer each other on. There is enough negative junk in this world. Jody has always kept it real. She was posting a page about living and having joy in all things.

I attend a Moms Bible Study with Jody. We have cried and laughed with Jody and we are richer for having her in our group.

Keep being you Jody!

Yes, anonymous, youR words are MEANINGLESS, GET THE SPELLING RIGHT ok? You and the other anonymous are one and the same. My sister, who is a doctor, told me that. Jody is real and a child of God. If you don't like her outlook on life and what she stands for GET OFF. Don't blame your negativity on someone who's positive. There's another place for that. I'm sure you've been there. If you're teed off about something, don't go here, this is a positive blog. YOU GO JODY.

I personally love it and admire the fact that you did a page about yourself.. in all my years of scrapping I have focused on my kids and husband and others... there is only ONE picture of me that I am alone and that's just my eyes....

I'm glad you can scrap and stand firm in what you believe it... !! I LOVE IT!!!! and love your stories..

Oh man does that little diddy bring back memmories!

And Jody, I wouldn't bother wasting time with a couple of people who don't even have the courage to own up to who they are, but instead continue to hide behind "anonymous" titles and can't seem to get the hint that this blog IS all about you and whatever happens to be on your mind at any given time. Just as it is with any other blogger you come across.

Love the scarp page by the way.

Wait, does the "uh 1, uh 2, uh 3 [crunch!]" commercial also have those lyrics? or are those two different commercials? 'Cause I don't remember any lyrics, but I remember the owl crunching down... :^)

Jody,
This is the first time I've been to your blog. What a thread! (I found you on Noah's site.)
I just started blogging, and I find it interesting that people blog, and others read blogs, for so many different reasons. It seems to me that many of your blogs are giving others hope through how you are taking the "licks" of life and ending up in the "sweet spot".
Be true to yourself and to Christ...

Pssst...Jodi, I love your blog. As is. If there's a post I don't connect to one day, I skip it and come back the next. It's YOUR blog! Sorry you're getting all the drama. As a mom of lots of kids with NO health issues, you inspire me. I find it amazing that you can make an ordinary activity with your kids into an extraordinary one. Thanks for sharing your nitty gritty life with us!

this is my first visit to your blog and I really like it. I'm disappointed in the negative posts you received here. if they want to come here and be inspired and not hear what YOU have to say, couldn't they just look at the pictures and quit complaining?

Personally, I love your blog!

Jody I think this is a GREAT page. We scrap for ourselves, for our family, for others to look back someday and remember certain times and feelings...we dont scrap to make OTHERS happy. It's sad that the people hiding behind "anonymous" can't see that. I wonder if they are even truly scrappers. Keep on keepin' on girl, and keep inspiring others. Love ya!!!

Monique said...

I like to scrap for journaling purposes (and have one book just about me.) It's sad that others are trying to tell you how to express yourself when know one knows you better than you, with the exception of HIM.
I think it's pretty bad that you have to defend YOUR art on YOUR blog but you did get to share your fabulous testimony!!! Thank you for sharing it with us!

Jody,

I have been reading your blog every day since the day I discovered it, when you won the Hello Kitty contest. I look to you for inspiration, as I try and muddle through my life, as I also have been struck with challenges of late. I am so sorry that these people feel they have a right to judge you, please continue to "keep it real"

Always, Ella
