My new best friend...

I hate to say this, but my new best 'friend' is extra strength Sudafed. I got hit by a nasty cold, and it knocked me off my feet almost all day long today. Still I managed to wash a couple of loads of laundry, but by the kids' bedtime, I was basically of no good to anyone around here.
So, thank goodness that for Chip bringing me some headache medicine- I just got up from a two hour 'nap', and at least I can stand up and it doesn't feel like my eyes will pop out of my head! I may not be on the mend as of yet, but at least I've got a med that will allow me to blog and do other important things in my daily routine. =)
I have decided to "plug" a fundraiser for my kids' school here...why not? It's like a cyber version of bringing an order form to the office, right? The deal is a magazine drive, and I guess rather than putting you all on the spot, I will simply ask those of you who already get a magazine(s) subscription, or if you are looking to receive a new one, you can email me your address, and I will send you a link to the magazine sale website. You can order a new magazine or renew a current subscription. There are hundreds of magazines to choose from (some deals too, like 2 years of Cooking Light for $20...less than a dollar an issue), and 40% of the purchases goes to the school.
So, if you want to check it out, email me, and then place your order by next Thursday, so I can turn in the orders for 'credit"...which is a prize like a bag of M&M's for each order. =) Hopefully my cold will be long gone by then. {My email address: nitty.grittyjody@yahoo.com }

Jody: I'm disappointed :(
You crossed the line asking for money for your kids' school. We ALL have to support our respective kid's fund drives.... The request didn't sit right with me. My funds will go to my own kids' fundraisers, thank you.

Sorry Jody,
My kids had a similar fundraiser so I already renewed everything...

I don't think you crossed the line by mentioning the fundraiser. You are good mom trying to help your kids. And it's not like you demanded that all of your blog readers buy a magazine! Sheesh!

Well, so sorry to see that your recent post may turn out to cause controversy w/ your readers.
I, personally, was not offended by your mentioning your childrens' fundraiser. To me, it was a simple "mention the facts" and let your readers choose whether to take part. There was no pressure from you, nor was there anything binding for your readers.

My child went to a private Christian school(Pre-K - 12), which took all kinds of fundraisers, all year long, every year, to keep the school in good financial shape. But, the fundraisers were strictly for all and whomever chose to participate.

Jody, you are an awesome writer and have done so much good for others, from your posts. And, I can almost bet, without having you say so, that this blogging has been one of the best sources of therapy for you, for coping w/ the loss of your precious daughter Teagan, along w/ all of the other effects of the accident that you, Chip & your entire family has had to deal with....and still do to this day, if nothing else, other than having Wyndham's medical issues to tend to.

I am praying that you have an awesome day. I pray that you are feeling better, physically, emotionally & mentally today.
All sicknesses can leave us drained and feeling incapicitated at times.

You are loved and you are doing the work that you feel God has called you to do. Keep it going.

Love, From one of your daily, regular readers.

Oh Geesh... I too, love reading your posts, and I love hearing about the scrapping, the kid's stories, your whimsical - offbeat thoughts, but...yes, the fundraiser was a little much. I don't even solicite my coworkers at my full-time job outside the home, because I understand that everyone is overwhelmed with their own fundraisers. (multiple kids x multiple drives per year) Yes, I hope you feel better, I love reading you daily, and I believe you are a good person. I'm sure the first anonymous poster thinks so, too. Just because the solicitation for fundraiser support was perhaps in poor taste (by some opinions, not all) it does not mean that we don't love you. And I'm sure EVERYONE wants you to have a swell day and feel better! :)

Oh, geesh... I love that people who offer criticism always do it anonymously. They could even make up a name if they wanted in the comment space. I DON'T have kids, and my nieces/nephews are home schooled, so don't assume ALL of Jody's readers have their own fundraisers. Maybe I was about to renew a magazine anyhow - I'd rather benefit some kids than have all my $ go to the publisher!

Gosh (rolls eyes)... I am surprised at those of you so quick to criticize, it is just a magazine drive.. Not ALL of us have kid's fund drives to support... and some of us appreciate her posting that, a lot of those subscriptions are at a great discount off the cover price. It isn't like she is asking for money to go on a trip or something it is to help her kids school out.

Shame on you that are so quick to judge her...and for those of you that do, well the next time one of your little brats comes to my house asking me to buy their funraising stuff I will just say no (and yes they must be brats if they are being raised by people like you). Get a life it is to short for you to be attacking her on something as small as this... she isn't holding a gun to your head or saying you that you have to or she won't blog anymore... she was just putting the information out there. goshe you all must be new readers to not know how genuine and caring of a person Jody is.(And, no I do not personally know Jody except for what I read on her blog)

Jody,
I hope you feel better... there is a nasty cold going around West Michigan right now, my whole family has had it as well as my parents and everyone at their house. Relax as much as you can and you will be feeling better before you know it.

Really, the whole point here is not that we don't love Jody - it is that it feels presumptuous to ask faithful readers for monetary support via the fundraiser. That's all. It did not feel at all like the regular Nitty Gritty blog theme. THAT's what took me off balance.
Still love you Jody.....

this is something that makes me sad about the blog world . . . it seems like it is so easy for us women to get caught up in
a) criticizing others
and then
b) getting caught up in the drama when somebody has been critical.

i have seen this go way overboard on other blogs . . . with dozens of comments made . . . each one more angry and critical than the one before. and those trying to defend the person who was criticized are all of a sudden so swept up in it that they become critical and unkind, themselves.

i hope that is not what happens here today. i hope people won't spend more time than necessary on this. we, as women, have enough things in life to stress us out and make us frusterated . . . let's try to encourage and build each other up in these few extra minutes we find to blog/etc.

I agree with Cara. I believe that Satan gets really happy when he sees us WOMEN being petty (can you see any of our husbands participating in a conversation like this?). And yes, that's what this is, petty. It's OK to think that Jody shouldn't have mentioned her kids fundraiser. Everyone can have their own opinion. It's OK to send Jody a private e-mail and tell her personally that you didn't think it was appropriate to ask for $. I strongly believe that appropriate posted comments are ones that are positive and encouraging.

Hey there all of you who are stressed at Jody...what is the big deal??? If you read Nitty. Gritty. each day then you should know the sweet, kind heart person I know...Jody. I am asking you with negative thoughts to put them to good use by turning them into positive thoughts...hey it is Friday...go do something nice for someone you love or better yet do for someone who isn't on your list of favorite people. There are a lot of hurting people out there and yes, some live near you.

come on now and let's give Jody a smile instead if a frown~

So when a woman has an opinion - and again, a woman expresses an opinion - Satan is somehow behind it? This is the most bizare thing I have ever heard. If men express opinions to one another and they are at odds, does one blame satan for the opinion of the another?? There must be a full moon. That is just unbelievable. Again, we love you Jody !! And we know YOU are open to differing opinions in this world....Next time you and Chip have a spat, tell him that Satan must somehow be with him !!!!

I just remembered I had a good story to share. Last night, I was at my local farmer's market, and I overheard a woman next to me say to her friend, "Oh those wild mushrooms always look sooo good, but I never buy them as they're expensive." So, I've become like my mom now, as I find I always randomly talk to strangers. I turned to her and said "you know, you can get a little amount for only a few dollars - they're delicious in scrambled eggs! Besides, life's too short not to enjoy them!" I surely was inspired by your blog, Jody, as I was kind of shocked to hear myself say that out loud (to a stranger no less!), and I must have been sufficiently bossy as she marched right over to the mushroom stand! But, it just seemed so silly - why deny yourself a pleasure that you could be enjoying for $5 or less?? I can be thrifty with the best of them, but sometimes just a taste of something special is enough to make you feel good - and I thought of all your lovely pictures of cupcakes and such! (and buttercream :)

Jody,
I have never wrote before but read your log daily and enjoy your stories, pictures, thoughts, etc...
Two of my children are away at college and my other is that dreaded word a new teenager and most of the time to cool for mom. So seeing and hearing stories about your children are so sweet to me....can't wait for grandkids!!!Back to the reason I decided to write...you just put the info out there and don't let one opinion speak for everyone else. I was exciting to see that maybe I could do something nice for your children for all you do for me....Hope you feel better soon!

Well, judging by the comments, looks like you will have a lot of new magazine subscriptions to submit!

Cara said...

Absolutely, women should express their opinions and raise their voices!!!! We have a perspective and a message that is unique and needs to be shared!

But like any GOOD THING, we have to be wise in how we use our voices, that's all. We can use our opinions and even our outrage to work towards justice and good stuff. Or we can get caught up in small things . . . .and find ourselves widdeling away time checking back at the comment section of a blog to see if anybody challenged or disagreed with our commments (see, that is what I JUST did . . . I should take my own advise sometimes! :)

I would hate for anybody to be so caught up in their frustration over something that doesn't not make a big mark in the long run, that they miss out in the joy of the day . . . or worse, miss a chance to use their voice for something significant. It saps our energy and attention and time that we could be using to raise our voices for things that are more important to us.

If you feel your frustration needs to be shared . . . great - use that voice of yours! But, just consider the forum. Doing it on a comment section just raises the "girl drama" antenas on the rest of us. And some of us pull ourselves into something that we weren't actually all the concerned about in the first place . . . but we DO love good drama, now don't we? :) So we will jump right in.

Ooohhh. Nitty.Gritty. drama is the BEST! Gotta love when people get worked up over magazine fundraisers. I am a fan that is looking forward to what Nitty.Gritty. has to say about all of this!!

Anonymous said...

Oh my goodness, can people just leave their opinions to themselves. If they don't want to participate in the fundraiser, DON'T! and stop thinking we even care what you think!

Susanna said...

People! Did you actually READ the blog entry? The magazine offer was addressed to people who already have a magazine subscription or might want one. If you don't fit into those categories, then HOW can you be offended? Jody certainly doesn't demand that you read her blog, and neither is she demanding that you buy a magazine! Most parents want to do as much as they can for their kids, including helping them with their magazine fundraiser. I personally applaud Jody for going the extra mile for her kids - not just in this instance but in everyday life. If you don't want to buy a magazine, then don't. Simple as that!
Your blog is a blessing, Jody. Thanks for sharing your life with us!

Jody - hope you are feeling better this evening...hope this little drama about the magazine subscriptions hasn't upset you. Everyone has different opinions but I think it was perfectly fine for you to mention the fundraiser. It is your own blog for goodness sake. We are like "visitors" in your "blogging room"... so why shouldn't you offer this to us. If anyone doesn't want to participate ... DON"T!! It's not like you are pressuring anyone....We have to send
our e-mail to Jody to find out how to subscribe. Get well Jody :)

Ah man it sucks to be sick. Try to take it easy and get plenty of rest. And hopefully you'll feel better soon.

Jody,

I just wanted to offer some support on the magazine issue. The bottom line is that it is YOUR blog and you can post anything you want on it. I thought that it was very tactful the way that you worded it. Hang in there and remember that you can't please everyone all of the time. Keep on being yourself. That's all you can do.

Take care and God Bless,

Julia

Love the GOLF TEES...okay I love anything with tons of color...but I am not sure how I feel about sharing you with others. I want you all to myself...how rude am I? Wait don't answer that.

wow!! that's all i can say. i don't know you or any of these ladies so my name won't help. i can't believe these absurd women who think it is their right to tell you what they feel about what you post on YOUR blog. i was shocked. these women are nasty and must be jealous of how great of a mom you are or something. i just don't see any other reason they'd think it was their responsiblity to tell you what they think is ok or not ok to post on your blog. ladies...who leave nasty anonymous posts- GET A LIFE or a JOB!!!
Jody you are wonderful and on behalf of a complete stranger and they must have been on something more than sudafed when they typed their comments!
