We never did get to eat pie that day.

These images are horrifying to look at and yet I am compelled to 'put them out there' today as our family marks the 9th anniversary of these days events. July 29, 2001.
We simply had plans to enjoy a family brunch at this restaurant called The Old Depot. We had never been there before but had heard that the pie was outstanding and we happened to have some extra time in our day that Sunday as Chip's boss had told him he could come into work at the golf course a bit later than usual. It was turning out to be a glorious, bright and sunny day.
But then something went horribly wrong.
Without warning the door and the wall and ceiling began crashing down in and around our family and some of the other guests at the restaurant just as we were taking our first few bites of breakfast. It was a scene unlike any other I have ever witnessed and one that will never be erased from my mind as I flew through the air, banged into things and finally landed in a pile of debris without ever losing consciousness. I had no idea what had just happened- but do remember that it felt as though a bomb had just exploded around us.
I quickly jumped to my feet and as I looked around the first person I saw was Teagan. She was laying where her chair should have been and I could see blood trickling out just beneath her head. I scooped her up and carried her out the hole where the door should have been.
That would be the last time I ever held my little girl.
* * * * *
Today I awoke and some of these images and others were on my mind. I would give anything to erase them and wish that July 29, 2001 was just another family day in which the events of that day blended into the next without much cause to remember. I never realized what a gift it was to live ordinary days that held simple joys and happiness- but once they were over they were soon forgotten because the next day held something just as easy and carefree.
But that was not to be.
Today when I woke up I felt angry. Even all these years later.
Wyndham had soaked through her pull-up and so I had to change her bedding and start some laundry... all because of her brain injury that will never fully heal from that day.
I tossed the sheets into the wash machine and felt my insides growing hot.
I thought of all the times I've had to wash her bedding from wetting or illness and wondered how many more times I will have to do it in the future- and the sting of unfairness burned stronger.
It's not fair.
We didn't even get to eat the pie we had heard so much about until nearly a year later when the Old Depot reopened its doors- having been rebuilt from the ground up.
Lives were changed in an instance that day.
Hearts were shattered; bodies torn and broken- inside and out; happiness replaced by sorrow and pain.
* * * * *
I post these photos and remember and wish it all different today, but at the same time I feel that burn and sting inside and remind myself all over again how it is a choice- sometimes a daily struggle- to live beyond the hurt, to rise above the self-pity that threatens to swallow me up if I think too long and hard about this reality, and most importantly, I am reminding myself to choose Joy again today. I want to remember the good times I had with Teagan, and to look back on all our family has overcome. It's been a long and winding path for us in 9 years, but all along the way there have been blessings beyond what I could have imagined life would hold for us through the years.
I was still feeling the ache inside when I said a quiet prayer- one I've prayed many, many times since I stood at the scene of these photos and that is this,
"Lord, I give it to you. I pray for peace, for comfort, for Joy in the midst of suffering."
It's not an easy thing to surrender and to invite God to hold the hurt for me, but I have learned and am still learning that it is the way to peace and even to forgiveness and that in turn frees me to feel happiness and Joy once again.
I know my suffering and pain pales in comparison to many of the hurts and struggles other people have lived through and continue to carry with them each day. I thank God that He has shown Himself faithful to our family in ways we never dreamed, and that He has healed us in so many ways and restored our Joy at times too.
* * * * *
The timer is just about to buzz on my oven letting me know that several loaves of zucchini bread are done baking. My swollen, pregnant belly has been slightly jerking from baby hiccups inside me the past several minutes. Crew and Brock are eating popsicles together outside and Bella and Ava are talking and laughing as they play Uno downstairs- a game they just learned how to play yesterday. Wyndham's bedding is about to be tossed into the dryer and I will start another load of laundry too.
Life today is simple and ordinary and sprinkled with bits of laughter too.
It's just the kind of day I wish July 29, 2001 had turned out to be. One not all that unlike all the other days that blend from one into the next.
The hurt is real... but I know even more than that, the Joy is far greater and definitely worth fighting and living for. If I could, I would invite you all over for coffee and fresh baked zucchini bread right now and I would tell you that although I don't know what the future holds for our family or for anyone, there is One who is in control who loves us all more than we would ever imagine and who has a plan to bring justice and glory from any pain we experience here on earth. One day because of our trust in God our sorrow will be forgotten and our tears will be wiped away and there will be only rejoicing forevermore.
I am seeking to trust in God's plans and His ability to bring forth Joy from any circumstance and trial we endure. It's not easy and I openly admit I don't even like the way He causes our path to turn at times... but there's no doubt in my heart or mind that it will be worth it all. One day!

So much for the 'wide open' calendar...

My mom called in early June and asked how our July looked if she and my dad wanted to come for a visit. I told her, "July is basically wide open". We didn't have too many events or activities planned. It was going to be a simple month of summer around our house.
Well, it has been a little busier than we had thought- a mix of more fun and even a bit of stress we didn't plan on.
A couple of weeks ago we were able to enjoy the company of our friend, Roxanne Robbins and her [soon-to-be] son Wasswa, who are visiting the States from Uganda, Africa this summer. Our kids hit it right off with Wasswa and hopefully he feels he made some lasting friendships too. We introduced him to a few things- like golf, Pop-Tarts and blue Jell-o. He didn't care for Jell-o but seemed to like all of the other food and activities we threw at him. We look forward to another visit from them in the future; or maybe our family will just have to travel to Uganda someday. Now that would be interesting!
Chip has been very busy working at the golf club this summer. We've had a lot of nice weather which makes for plenty of rounds of golf by guests and members at his course. His boss (Dan Rooney- founder of The Folds of Honor Foundation) and family were in town for a week and we hit the beach together (9+ kids between our two families so far) and were glad to see how well the local Michigan Patriot Golf Day event went while they were here too. In that top family photo we were out at the course for the night's closing events and I somehow managed to talk Chip into a family photo on the putting green- despite the fact that he had been up since 3:30 that morning and had worked all day long. I think maybe the trick to a casual family photo is to first wear everyone out and then make them sit for a quick minute. It worked once! =)
This past week my parents were at our place for a visit. We only see them about once a year as they live in Minnesota. I was so glad they offered to come and take on that 12 hour drive so that we didn't have to do it this summer. Crew hates to sit in his car seat for more than 10 minutes, and I hate packing for 7 people- and riding all that way in my third trimester of pregnancy, so it worked out best for all of us. Poor Wyndham though... she got a touch of something that caused a mild fever and made her quit eating or drinking for almost their entire visit. Chip took her in to the ER for IV fluids/lab tests one night and still she wasn't herself for several days. She is just starting to perk up back to her normal self, but that bit of stress and illness made the rest of us tone down our plans for fun and activites all week.
We did make it down to the waterfront/park one evening and we celebrated Bella's 8th birthday just a bit early so that Grandma and Grandpa could get in on the cake and homemade icecream too. Sometimes you just have to go with what life hands you and make the best of those times- even when you wish they could be a bit different.
In just a few more days we mark another annivesary of our family tragedy and loss of Teagan. I know for me it is such an emotional time and one where I get reflective and wishful all over again. But I continue to try to challenge myself to see some bits of happiness and good in what life continues to give us. Somedays I do better than others; other days I wish I could just rewind the years and chart the course of life myself. It always comes down to a matter of faith and trust that God sees the 'wide open calendar' and is writing the events of our days just as He planned them to be. I know He has our best at heart and that is the best comfort to me- no matter what comes our way!

Update to previous post...

Thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers for Wyndham today. She received a great report for now- no growth hormone shots needed for at least another six months! We're so happy for her to continue to be able to skip these nightly injections and we're going to keep hoping that her body will keep doing what its doing and stay on curve with her growth.
The short story is that her pituitary gland was damaged in her initial brain injury and for the first year after the incident she didn't grow at all. She has been behind on her growth and been playing 'catch up' for several years and just this past year showed a nice pace on the growth charts. The doctors feel it may be early puberty that is the explanation for her body being able to maintain this growth (even though it has slowed some the past 6 months) and they are going to keep an eye on how things continue to go. Thus, no need for shots right now. Hooray!
This report made me think back to one of the first scrap pages I ever made- one about our hopes and dreams for Wyndham despite all she is up against. I am humbled and grateful- yet again- that God has brought her this far and it is just the little bit of "good news" I need as we face her major surgery in just a couple of months. I am dreading it for her- but again, I know the best thing we can do for her is pour out our love and care and most of all never stop hoping for the best!
Finally I just have to ask... is it just me, or does Wyndham have an amazing smile?! I love it on her so much and feel blessed to see it on her every day. =)

"Because we don't know what to expect..."

Tomorrow Wyndham has a doctor appointment with her endocronologist. There was a time in my life when I had never heard of an endocronologist. Now I am hoping that she gets good news from him- again. Several months ago we were able to stop giving Wyndham her hormone shot each night for the first time in 7 years. It's been so wonderful to not have a shot be part of our bedtime routine. She hasn't missed getting them and we've been relieved to not have to give them. It just seems to make the bedtime ritual that much easier without the hassle and pain of shots. However, tomorrow may be the day we find out if she has to start back on them. We are hoping for the best for Wyndham once again. I'd love if you'd hope along with us too!
Ever since the day she was discharged from Hurley Hospital in August of 2001 we have hoped for the best for her. We have always hoped for the best for all of our children, but Wyndham has had the most frequent and extreme medical needs for hope out of all of the kids. This month makes me think back to how things were, how they might have been, and just how our reality is different than I ever imagined it to be as a result of our tragedy. It doesn't take much to bring me down or for me to start feeling sorry for myself or the rest of my gang. We have been through a lot and it seems there is always some sort of reminder of that. It even happened at dinner tonight.
Chip called and said he would be home in time for dinner and I then turned off the pan of water I was starting to boil for macaroni and cheese and instead I got the kids together to get their flip flops on and take a quick bathroom break. We had a luxury family dinner at our local Perkins- two of our kids even got to eat free with our adult purchases. =) But the part that hit me was when we had them circle the picture on their kids menu of what they wanted to eat for dinner. Three of them picked chocolate chip pancakes.
That just happens to be the last thing Teagan ever ate in her life. I'll never forget it.
So, that's just one of the things that can bring a wave of emotion back into my heart and mind. I have learned to embrace and live with these "waves" and accept them when they come. Most often they make me smile more than choke up- because for me to have instances where memories and reminders of Teagan come rushing back is a good thing. They sort of feel like little heart-tugs/hugs from her. I remind myself that I am lucky to have had time with Teagan and luckier still that I haven't ever fully let her go. She's still a part of my life- no matter how much time passes.
But I will admit to you that I do hurt over the loss and the pain and the troubles that Wyndham continues to carry with her every single day. Most days she gets along well and seems to be as happy or happier than the rest of the kids in our family. Even on the days when things don't always go well for her she still has a smile or a twinkle in her eye or some sort of silly thing to show us through her use of sign or just by being her. She has major delays and can't talk or run like the others, but she somehow manages to keep her chin up.
I credit her for being the inspiration and drive behind me wanting more out of life when life was giving us a whole lot of hurt. At the time of her hospital discharge her team of doctors couldn't offer us a long-term prognosis of any kind. In fact, I even remember some of them saying they didn't know what to tell us, because the truth is they didn't know what to expect. They were surpised that she had survived her inital injuries and brain surgery and none had any experience with the recovery process from such traumatic injuries. She just sort of left them all speechless and amazed. We sort of felt the same way, but as parents we were the ones to take her home to "wait and see what happens".
We've been watching her heal and grow and change for almost 9 years now and in almost every respect we've been blown away at just how much she has been able to overcome. So tomorrow as she heads to yet another doctor appointment, we don't know what to expect. But we're going to do what we always do and that is this: we will pray and thank God for all He has done in Wyndham's life and we will hope for more of the best. Goodness knows she deserves it!

Summertime and siblings and smiles...

It's really summertime- July already! We had a great Coke Float night as a family but didn't really get the best photos out of our time together. The mugs were frosty though and the kids were happy to sip their drinks and get cart rides at the golf course as well. Thanks to so many of you who emailed me notes and/or photos of your family celebrating together too! It always feels like the official "kick-off" of remembering Teagan from now til the end of the month. There were lots of great times that July of 2001, and of course, there is the sorrow and hurt that always lurks as the 29th and 30th approaches. Thankfully, we have lots of smiles to recall and new ones we're capturing right now too, and so it goes in summertime for us!
The past week or so we have been enjoying the heat, sun and air conditioning too. =) We've gone through lots of popsicles and ice pops and the sprinklers run to keep the lawn watered and the kids happy at the same time too! I was just looking through some of the photos I snapped this week and recalling how Ava and Crew had a special connection being the youngest and at home together when he was first born. It's amazing to me just how quickly the age gap closes and they find similar interests {like sprinklers and popsicles!} and develop a unique bond even at this young age. Crew has taken quite an interest in posing and looking right into the camera, so that makes me happy too. I will admit that I am sensing some "fear" as I try to imagine how he will react to a new baby and suddenly join the ranks as an 'older kid' just like his other siblings. I am hoping for a smooth transition and we've never had jealousy issues in the past, but as I know full well, there's a first time for everything, so we'll have to wait and see! We're approaching the countdown and already are only about 6 weeks away from meeting our new baby face-to-face.
With this month of July in full-swing I do find myself emotional, thoughtful and always grateful that God goes ahead of me and knows exactly what is planned for us- being mindful that He is love and is never taken by surprise! Whether or not you need encouragement or comforting from life's hurt, or even Hope for something that is spinning out of control in your life, I hope you can sense that God is bigger than all of it and when you trust Him in everything He never lets you down!
I've lived and learned that lesson more than once in my lifetime, and hope that no matter how much disappointment or joy my family experiences in life, that they will rest in the promise of God's unchanging character. He is good. ALL the time.
Right now we are fortunate to be enjoying "mostly good" and we're so grateful for summer, blessings, and the promise of things yet to come!

Tomorrow is "Coke Float Day" at our house.

I'll probably make my float with caffeine-free Diet Coke, but it will be special just the same. =)
We invite you to join us in making a memory with your family or a friend or loved one too. Whether it's today or tomorrow or any other day that you find yourself 'living in the moment' and realizing that ordinary can be extraordinary- moments are a gift every day!
We will forever remember this moment and time we had with Teagan. We cherish it and we're glad to make new memories with our family as the days and years go on. One day I know we'll all enjoy being with Teagan again- in a very special place called Heaven!
And now, here is the story behind "Coke Float Day". I hope it touches you in some small way...enjoy!

Today our family affectionately terms this day "Coke Float Day". Coke float day marks one month prior to the day we said our last goodbyes to Teagan and happens to be a day we captured a special moment in her life and ours in this photo above. The day was June 30, 2001; Teagan stayed up late as she often did to say goodnight to Daddy after he'd been away at work all day. This day we made that goodnight extra special by letting her and Chip have Coke floats- served at her little table in the 'special' tall malt glasses. She was so excited to have this time with Chip. She always was a Daddy's girl and I'm so glad I thought to grab the camera and snap a photo of this late-night date they shared that day.
We had already learned that life was precious and we should make the most of the time we have together because of an incident where we found Wyndham unresponsive and purple months earlier that same year. We had already learned to let go of some of the frustrations in life and to take in the fun times together or make a memory out of an ordinary day.
What we couldn't have known was that Teagan's days were coming to an abrupt end and our lives would never be the same in a matter of one month. What we couldn't have known was that this simple late night Coke float date would become one of our cherished memories we would have with her and wish back more times than we could count. What we didn't know is that this picture would look old and dated and capture the way we would remember her for years to come. What we didn't know is our quiet, unassuming lives would be changed in an instant and our faith would be the only thing left to stand on.
We are grateful for this time and the wonderful memories we made with Teagan while we had her and we cherish them for what they were and still are to us. Her life and death have taught us so much and we never want to forget to make the most of the moments we're given here on earth. Today- Coke Float Day- reminds us again to enjoy the here and now, to do something 'special' just because we can, and to celebrate the simple and ordinary moments we have with one another. We invite you to join our family today, or tomorrow, or whenever the opportunity arises in your own life to do the same thing. Be in the moment. Enjoy THIS day. Hug a little tighter; share a smile with someone around you. Give yourself permission to let something else go and make a memory you'll cherish for a lifetime. Even if it means staying up past bedtime and going a little over the top to make the memory extra special.
It shouldn't take a tragedy for us to all see the gift of what we already have. Our family has learned the significance of now. Today we remember it again and share it with you too. May you have a special Coke Float Day- or Pepsi or rootbeer or cupcakes or movie night or however you choose to "celebrate" now!

Another busy week!

I didn't realize I missed blogging all week long. I'm sure most of you are just as busy as I am so you probably didn't notice either!
Brock, Bell and Ava had day camp at our local YMCA Monday through Friday. They loved it and were worn out when they got home every day. I was worn out from packing 15 lunches by Friday and keeping up with washing and drying their swimsuits and towels in time for the next morning. Ava neglected to tell me that she got bubblegum in her hair one day and so the next morning when I went to braid her hair I got quite a surprise. I will say that I was fully expecting her to have to get a major haircut. However, the canola oil in my baking cupboard along with a large dose of shampoo, conditioner and patience was almost enough to get it all out. I think she learned a very important life lesson. And I am hoping we never have to repeat it around here! =)
We also did a bit of re-arranging of beds and now have Bella and Ava sharing a room in order to make way for baby #7. SO far all the kids have had their own space and it's worked out well. But they seem to be adjusting to it and even liking it a lot at certain times. Like from 8 til 10 pm at night! I have high hopes that by the time we welcome this next addition everyone will be very comfortable in their new spots and I will be the only one having a hard time getting enough sleep. But I won't stop and think about that too long... or it will wear me out and we still have some more busy weeks of summer ahead of us to enjoy. I hope you do too!!

It must be more than luck...

We feel blessed and grateful to have a wonderful, caring, involved Dad in our lives! He's not perfect, but sure has a lot of great qualities and one that stands out above the others is the way he is able to show his love to each of his kids individually. They love him right back in their own ways, and it just seems to be something so much more than luck. The relationship between this dad and his kids is a gift that goes both ways. I'm sure Chip would say he is luckiest to have these kids as a part of his life, and the kids would all say they wouldn't want any other dad than him.
It was quite a feat to get the kids to take individual photos on the front step this week, but they were all smiles when I pointed the camera at them and said, "Smile for Daddy!". Chip has stolen each of their hearts as only he can. We just want to tell him that he is loved and adored and appreciated each and everyday by our whole family. We're so glad to be the ones to hug and kiss you and laugh and play with you every day. Thanks for being such a devoted Dad!! Happy Father's Day from your angel in Heaven Teagan, Brock, Wyndham, Bella, Ava, Crew and even Baby who-still-needs-a-name. xo xo xo xo xo xo xo {That's a lot of hugs and kisses... and we'll always have more for you!}

My favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe {and story}~

For those of you who are interested in the cookie recipe I used when I made the ice cream cookie sandwiches, here it is. Along with it comes the urban legend and tale of how it came to be. Whether it's from Neiman Marcus or Mrs. Field's or neither has been subject of debate. But what's not to debate is just how delicious these cookies are! I always make a half batch and it makes plenty for me- like 3 dozen or more, depending on the size. I never overbake them- anywhere from 8-12 minutes in the oven... again, it depends on the size of the cookie you are making. My advice is to just stay close to the oven and keep checking them before they have a chance to bake through and get too crispy. Unless you love crispy cookies. Then bake them as long as you like! =)
For the cookie sandwiches, my kids like any kind of ice cream in the middle, but they especially love chocolate chip cookie dough... because you can never have too much of that when you're a kid!
{Edited to let you know the following story is one that has been told and re-told. I didn't actually live this experience! And if I did, I certainly hope I would be more gracious in my response. =)}
I hope you enjoy both the recipe and story. Here they are:
My daughter and I had just finished a salad at Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas & decided to have a small dessert. Because both of us are such cookie lovers, we decided to try the "Neiman-Marcus Cookie". It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe and the waitress said with a small frown "I'm afraid not." Well" I said, "would you let me buy the recipe?"
With a cute smile, she said YES". I asked how much and she responded, "Only two fifty, it's a great deal!" I said with approval, "just add it to my tab".. Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement from Neiman-Marcus and it was $285.00. I looked again and remembered I had only spent $9.95 for two salads and about $20.00 for a scarf. As I glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, "Cookie Recipe - $250.00". That's outrageous!!!
I called Neiman's Accounting Dept. and told them that the waitress said it was "two-fifty," which clearly does not mean "two hundred and fifty dollars" by any POSSIBLE interpretation of the phrase. Neiman-Marcus refused to budge.. They would not refund my money, because according to them, "What the waitress told you is not our problem. You have already seen the recipe - we absolutely will not refund your money at this point." I explained to her the criminal statutes which govern fraud in Texas. I threatened to refer them to the Better Business Bureau and the State's Attorney General for engaging in fraud. I was basically told, "Do what you want, we don't care and we're not refunding your money." I waited a moment, thinking of how I could get even,or even try to get any of my money back. I just said, "Okay, you folks got my $250.00, and now I'm going to have $250.00 worth of fun."
I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover in the United States with an e-mail account has a $250.00 cookie recipe from Neiman-Marcus... for free..She replied, "I wish you wouldn't do this" I said, "Well you should have thought of that before you ripped me off", and slammed down the phone on her.. So, here it is!!! Please, please, please pass it on to everyone you can possibly think of. I paid $250.00 dollars for this... I don't want Neiman-Marcus to ever get another penny off of this recipe....
(Recipe may be halved): 2 cups butter 4 cups flour 2 tsp. baking soda 2 cups granulated sugar 2 cups brown sugar 5 cups blended oatmeal (measure oatmeal and blend in blender to a fine powder) 24 oz. chocolate chips 1 tsp. salt 1 8 oz. Hershey bar (grated) 4 eggs 2 tsp. baking powder 3 cups chopped nuts (your choice) 2 tsp. vanilla
Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet..Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 112 cookies.
Have Fun!!!

What's not to love about summer!

The first full week of our summer is coming to a close. It's been simple and exhausting and wonderful- all at the same time. I love having the kids on their 'new bedtime schedule'- which is staying up later and sleeping in until around 8am or later too. They all like breakfast at a leisure pace- which is nice for me! But the rest of the day can come with demands, or meltdowns, or humidty and temps that make it hard to decide what to eat for dinner. Much less make it!
I haven't been the perfect mom and they haven't been the perfect kids, but we've managed to enjoy some simple joys of summer nonetheless.
Including homemade fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches... yum! The swingset is getting some use, as is the sprinkler, little pool and squirt guns too. Chip made a quick trip to the local farmer's market today and the strawberries seem to already be at their peak- they are big, red, juicy and delicious!
Wyndham had one more surgical consult for her upcoming double-foot realignment surgery scheduled for Sept. 29th. It went well and her doctor seems very confident in his skills and how we can hope the outcome to be. So, for now we are just going to enjoy the fun, simple things of summer, and not think too much about what lies just ahead. Afterall, what makes for fun is living in it and enjoying it as it happens. It means licking the ice cream around the edge of your cookie sandwich before it melts and drips down your chin. It's about taking in the little details and turning them into great memories.
That's what we love about summer! Hopefully we'll have lots more fun and photos to share as the next couple of months unfold. And for the record... we all highly recommend fresh-baked chocolate chip ice cream cookie sandwiches!

The power of pause-

One of the most powerful and moving moments during our trip to Oklahoma last week happened when everything stopped. The Folds of Honor Foundation headquarters sits just next door to the Patriot Golf Club building/pro shop and it is a beautiful structure complete with a bell tower at its peak.
The meaning of the name Folds of Honor comes from the thirteen folds in the flag- each representing something such as allegiance and honor and other worthy characteristics. The flag is always folded and given to the families of a fallen soldier. It is a powerful symbol and I am sure becomes quite a treasure for those grieving their loss to cling to.
At The Patriot Golf Club, while it is a spectacular golf course and wonderful place to enjoy the company of family and friends or business partners, our friend and club founder, Dan Rooney wanted it to be even more than just a nice place. His real purpose in creating such a place is for those fallen and disabled to be remembered and for the freedoms they fought for to be enjoyed by all. But the remembering part is of utmost importance. So, at precisely 1300 hours (1:00 pm) each day, the bell at the top of the foundation headquarters begins to toll and reaches to all corners of the course and its facilities. Dan asks that wherever you are; whatever you're doing, that at that moment you stop and pause and silently pause to pay respect for the ultimate sacrifice that so many people have made for our great nation. The bell then tolls 13 times- symbolizing the thirteen folds of the flag.
Chip and I were at the course on a couple of occasions when the bell began to toll. It was amazing and powerful for us to witness everyone and everything around us suddenly come to a halt-caps removed, heads bowed and people stood silently- for a long, solemn moment. I can hardly think of a time in my 'regular life' during the day in which everything suddenly comes to a halt and quiet fills the space for a full moment. So for me, to experience such an event with hundreds of people and activity swilring around me made quite an impact.
It seems such a powerful thing- and yet is a simple, quiet pause. Do you know how long a minute seems when there is no sound except the occasional bong of a bell? It feels much longer than a minute. And yet to think that thousands of lives have been given and we rarely take a moment to pause and remember and to be grateful for such sacrifice seems so unfair. The moment that the bell tolls at 1300 hour definitely gave me much to think about and made me so much more aware of what it truly means to be a patriot and give your all.
I was so inspired and moved by the impact I felt from a moment of quiet that I am now seeking to 'work' at least a moment of quiet into my life each day. And not just solely to think about sacrifice and freedom, but also because I realize how my soul is stirred by solace and quiet. As a busy mom of lots of little kids, quiet is hardly available to me and I realized just how much I truly appreciate it. Even for just a moment out of my day.
I write this all as a note to myself- I don't want to forget the power of pause. And if you are so inclined, I invite you to take a moment out of your own day and experience the same thing. I don't know what effect it will have on you, but in the busyness of our lives, it is something that is becoming more and more rare and hard to 'find'. I think it's something we all need a bit more of- quiet, reflective, powerful moments. Our souls were made for at least a small taste of that each day.

Busy baby...

Seems someone is just as busy and active inside of me as the rest of the kids are outside of me today! We officially started summer earlier today at our final school assembly. We have quite a few plans on the calendar from now til September, including having a baby at some point in the coming weeks. My due date is 11 weeks from tomorrow, but since I've only made it to my due date once in the previous 6 pregnancies, I am planning ahead for this next one too. Teagan was born on her due date and the others have come at least a week to more than a month early. So, I feel like it's only fair to me, the baby and the rest of us to start getting on top of things sooner- rather than later.
It seems like the weeks are going by all too quickly this time around. It's the nature of things when you have so many other kids keeping your mind and body off the {growing} task at hand. I rarely have time to stop and think about what to expect- which is maybe why the baby keeps kicking and moving so often- to simply remind me that life is going to change for all of us again- soon!
I sure hope we have a fun summer and that this belly doesn't grow too big for me to enjoy a little bit of the fun too! If so, I will blame it on the heat and extra ice cream I eat to stay cool. {wink}

Whirlwind weekend

Chip and I had an amazing Memorial Day weekend. It was one filled with patriotism, honoring and remembering fallen and disabled heroes and their families, as well as celebration of the game of golf and all the fun that our freedom entitles each of us in this great nation in which we live. We spent the weekend at the brand new Patriot Golf Club- it opened just a week ago just outside of Tulsa, OK. The city skyline makes a beautiful backdrop right off the first tee box. It's a wonderful view!
The event/course and The Folds of Honor Foundation was the vision and dream of Chip's boss and golf club owner, Major Dan Rooney. {He and his wife, Jacy, are pictured with us in the second to last photo.} Dan and his family have become great friends to us over the years and we were thrilled to be able to join them for this special and inspiration inaugural event. Chip was thrilled to golf not just once or twice, but with touring PGA pro, Brad Faxon, for his third round. We met some great people all weekend, including golf superstar, Rickie Fowler. None of the pros asked for a dime in return for their time and appearance. Vince Gill not only golfed {and won the event with his team}, but also ate dinner at the event and then closed it out with a private concert for about 750 of us in attendance at the Hard Rock Hotel in Tulsa. It was a grand and emotionally moving occasion, indeed! My sister, Jacque and her husband Dave joined us all weekend as our guests. They live in Las Vegas and we rarely see one another. So not only were the daily activites fun and exciting, but we also had a small family reunion going on at the same time. I couldn't have asked for a better trip. Except for a few details- like the 95 degree heat making my feet swell so much that I couldn't even wear a couple of my sandals. And then there was the lack of sleep- for so many things going on. One other thing these photos don't reveal is that Chip and I were paged at the Tulsa airport (I've never heard my name over an airport loudspeaker before and hope I never do again!)and had to run from security checkpoint to our gate. Which {always!} happened to be about as far down the concourse as possible. I thought I could land in premature delivery, but finally managed to catch my breath and the flights home went smoothly- so it all ended well. =)
The kids had a wonderful family taking care of them while we were away. Crew gave us the biggest, tightest hugs when he saw us at home again, but the others were actually a bit bummed we came home earlier than they had planned. They wanted to go swimming another afternoon and had had so much fun they didn't really mind that we'd been gone. That's just the way I wanted it to be.
I am glad it all went better than I imagined it would be. I also look forward to the next time Chip and I can get away and hopefully it will be for an equally worthy cause! There's something special about not just vacationing, but knowing you are doing something good at the same time.

Blogging from Oklahoma!

What a week we've had! Between end-of-the year school parties and cupcakes and summer temps and Ava's kindergarten graduation I was definitely busier than usual. And usual is generally busy all its own! Extra-busy is good though- even kind of wonderful this time around!
Chip and I are away together in Tulsa taking in the activities and supporting his boss and friend, Dan Rooney, as he hosts the inaugural Patriot Cup event at his brand new golf course, The Patriot. We have already enjoyed the spectactular views of the course and tomorrow we are excited to attend the gala evening with Vince Gill honoring of families of disabled and fallen heros and supporting the Fallen Heros Foundation. Such a worthy cause! We are honored to be invited to such an event and to not only be able to get away for this amazing weekend, but also to know that our kids are getting great care and enjoying their time with some wonderful family friends too. To top it off, my sister and her husband joined us here in Tulsa as our guests for the event, so I'm getting sister/family time as well! {My sister/husband live in Las Vegas and it's rare that we ever get to see each other...so that's an extra special treat for me!}
I also just kicked off the third trimester of pregnancy and I'm feeling good- getting kicked often! =) My feet swelled up in the heat and humidity yesterday when we landed in OK and spent most of the day outdoors. But they seem to be better after a full, quiet night of sleep. Hopefully I will fit back into my strappy sandals by tonight. =)
I have to say I have enjoyed reading your thoughts and comments on baby names. It will be fun to finally have a face and name for Baby #7 as we call him in not so many weeks! Ava thought Chip and I were going away for the weekend to have the baby already. She wondered why I was packing sparkly black shoes just to go to the hospital! I had to laugh and actually think maybe I should take my black heels along with me for the big event. It's sure to be a special occasion.
I hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. It is an honor for Chip and me to be upclose and supporting some of our nation's hero's of the day as we reflect on the true cost of the freedom we enjoy in this great country every single day.
I am feeling truly blessed. I trust you are too!

Hot topic.

The last time I posted a list of baby names that Chip and I were considering while we were expecting Crew there were quite a few opinions and comments posted in response. Since you all have your own opinions, I am guessing this time around won't be any different.
Now, we haven't even determined whether or not this is the final list of possibilities, and I have a strong feeling that it's not. But for your fun and interest I decided to post the names on our list as of right now. Some of the names are my selections, some are Chip's. They are in random order. Feel free to leave your comments...just don't be so rude that you take all the fun out of this process. Afterall, pregnancy has its own aches and pains and I don't really need to add to those at this point! =)
Here's our current list of baby boy names:
Austin
Campbell
Cajetan (a distant name in Chip's family lineage... pronounced KAJ-uh-tan)
Dain
Eamon
Easton
Gannon
Grady
Jock
Maguire
Okello
Pierce
Preston
Reid
Ryder
Seamus
Tait
Teague
Wilson

The best part of waking up...

I had a coupon for a free Starbuck's coffee {free always tastes best!} and Chip was kind enough to pick it up and drop it off for me this morning. It was a tall half-caf coffee of the day and I added a generous splash of coconut creamer. My favorite creamer flavor. =)
I then poured half of it into my mug and headed out to the deck to enoy the morning sun- as the heat will be kicking up later in the day. Gotta enjoy the sun and mild humidity while we can! As I took my first sips of coffee, Crew came over and said, "mmmmmm" over and over. He loves coffee. With lots of cream too. I gave him a few sips and then he pointed to the rest of the leftover cup. We enjoyed our coffee together. He read his favorite "Good Dog, Carl" books... and I flipped through "30,0o1 Baby Names" book. It was the perfect way to start the day.
Hope you enjoy your day too!

Yum...springtime!

I have fresh, organic Rhubarb Cream Cake baking in my oven right now. {Click here for recipe.} I have all the windows open. I have flowers planted by Chip along the border of our landscape and blossoming in containers by my door. I have a couple of kids playing outside with the neighbor kids in their sprinkler.
Spring is a wonderful time of year!
What do you love about spring?
Feel free to share {and leave links to recipes too!} =)

More than I imagined.

I never dreamed my lap and arms would be this full of kids and life and energy. I never dreamed that becoming a mom would change me as much as it has- since the first moment a baby was placed in my arms. The highs have been higher; the lows, lower. From great joy to deep sorrow and everything in between, I have experienced it and felt it over the past 13+ years. I had no idea I would change diapers non-stop for this long. I had no idea I would be asked to donate organs of one who had captured my heart. I had no idea I would lose so much sleep or shed so many tears. On the flipside...
I never knew that kids could whisper, "I love you" or "You're the best mom ever" and turn my mood around in an instant. My kids have asked more of me that I thought I could ever give some days, yet not a day goes by that demands too much of me. I always have more love to give. More kisses and hugs to share. More pinky-promises to swear to them of my undying love, and more hope in my heart for what they will become. I couldn't imagine ever having kids at one time in my life, and now I can't imagine what it will be like to hold my seventh child.

It is overwhelming to be a mom- on so many different levels- and yet it's the most natural, wonderful thing I know how to do. Love and wish and expect and dream and always be there for them no matter what. This is what motherhood means to me. I can only hope that I am living up to my expectations, if even in small part.
Being a mom has changed me. I wouldn't want it any other way.
I love you, Teagan, Brock, Wyndham, Bella, Ava, Crew and Baby who kicked me in the side through the whole church service this morning. =) You are undeserving gifts in my life. Forever and always. Thanks for helping me become the mom I am lucky enough to be. I love you!!

Peace and quiet.

I picked up Bella from school today with just Wyndham in the car with me. Brock is away with his classmates at camp and Crew and Ava were home with Chip while Wyndham was at therapy and I had a baby check-up at the doctor.
Bella climbs into the car and after about 1 minute she said, "It sure is peaceful in here!" Then a moment later she added, "I'm talking about the peace and quiet. It's just so quiet!"
I had to agree with her.
It WAS nice and peaceful. And quiet.
But we both agreed.
It didn't "feel" quite right.
There's something wonderful about peace and quiet at times. But as we drove on I couldn't help think about how many times I missed Teagan's voice. It's something you never quite get used to. I'd take the noise over the quiet anyday. We already miss Brock in just one day. He'll be home by tomorrow though.
And we quickly got our dose of noise from Ava and Crew. We were barely inside the door when their noise started up. Crew always comes running and has something to "say".
I would take more of the peace part of the equation around here though. It seems kids my kids go from being best friends to worst enemies at the drop of a hat. Peace all the time would be a good thing. But in the meantime, the noise does have it's charming qualities.
I was happy to be reminded today of just how much I really do like the noise afterall. =)

One less thing to worry about!

I am happy to share a couple of pictures of Wyndham along with the news that her EEG results came back normal yesterday after her scan. We are thrilled to know that after two years of medication everything appears to be normal and we no longer need to be concerned for seizures. We haven't been overly concerned about the idea of her having seizures for awhile now, but it is certainly reassuring that we can keep her off meds for now and have no further concerns. That means she is now off of ALL medication (including growth hormone shots too!) until further notice from her doctors. After all the procedures and treatments she has been through it is nothing short of miraculous, if you ask me.
Maybe it is just a brief calm before the storm we have as we anticipate her major surgery this fall, but either way it is nice to enjoy the "now" just the same. I think we may see a bit more burst of her personality as her body adjusts to her just being "her" again. That is a special treat all in itself. And I'm not going to even worry about what lies ahead for fear that it will take away the wonder of our present now. Now is a very good thing!
